Mexican Unions Block Highways, Demanding Security and Fair Prices

Major transport unions in Mexico have launched a large-scale strike, blocking key highways around the capital. They are demanding the government ensure security on roads from criminal groups and establish fair prices for their services. The government accuses the organizers of political motives and is trying to resolve the conflict.

Mexican Unions Block Highways, Demanding Security and Fair Prices

Disputes between unions and the government are escalating, leading to intense clashes in recent weeks. The sectors mobilized this Monday demand greater highway security, fair prices, and rejection of the water law.

Hours after the strike began, the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, denounced political interests behind it, stating, «there is no reason to continue except for political motivations that create the perception of neglecting social demands.» The government, in turn, accuses the unions of «political interests».

As anticipated in recent days, the country's largest transport unions are blocking highways around Mexico City and the State of Mexico, such as the Mexico-Toluca, Lechería-Texcoco, José López Portillo, and the North Arc. One of Monday's demands is for greater security on the nation's highways, where transporters are exposed to illicit activities by organized crime, such as extortion, robbery, kidnapping, and «protection» fees.

Rosa Icela dismisses real motives for the blockades: «They respond to political interests.» Additionally, the mobilized sectors demand fairer prices for their work and services, similar to what happened a few weeks ago with corn producers.

She also called a meeting for this afternoon with the mobilized sectors, which, at the time of this report, was not confirmed due to union resistance.

Over the past few months, transport and agricultural unions have become a headache for the government, which has failed to resolve the crisis and constantly suffers from new blockades. After weeks of threats and meetings, the groups representing cargo, mobility, and agricultural sectors are implementing major blockades on federal routes across the country to demand greater highway security and fair prices for their work.

However, the meeting is not confirmed, and the conflict could continue in the coming days. The Ministry of the Interior (Segob) believes there is no reason for the mobilizations, let alone for the blockades affecting the public.

This new conflict with the mobilized sectors is once again impacting the federal government, which is not having its best weeks. «The Segob considers there is no reason for the mobilizations, much less for the blockades affecting citizens in different parts of the country, unless they respond to political motivations against our government,» reiterated Rosa Icela Rodríguez, who will seek to defuse the conflict in a meeting scheduled for this afternoon alongside her counterpart from the Ministry of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué.

This is compounded by, for example, the murder of Carlos Manzo in Uruapan, the recent Generation Z march that caused violent incidents in the capital's Zócalo, and the accusations from U.S. President Donald Trump, who once again showed an interventionist stance on security and the fight against drugs after what seemed to be a relative peace with the administration led by Claudia Sheinbaum.

Due to this unfavorable scenario for the Fourth Transformation (4T), the ruling party has already launched a plan to regain the agenda and show strength both domestically and internationally.

The uniting transport unions are once again putting the government led by Claudia Sheinbaum in a difficult position. «Now they are demanding 7,200 pesos per ton,» declared the Secretary of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué, denouncing the alleged political interests behind this demand.

As reported by LPO, the ruling MORENA party is calling for a mobilization on December 6th at the Zócalo of Mexico City, where President Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to speak to commemorate and celebrate the first seven years of MORENA governments. «There is much to celebrate for how the country has changed,» the head of state stated this Monday during her regular press conference.

Additionally, there are mobilizations in Chihuahua, San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas. In this regard, she explained that the price of corn has risen from 2,400 to 6,000 pesos, so a new increase could lead to a rise in the price of tortillas.
